On the Fake Kanye Story

"The Daily Currant" ran a fake interview with Kanye West saying he thinks he is 'the next Nelson Mandela'. In response to his pseudo remarks, some people took to Twitter saying:

[Kanye West thinks he's the next Nelson Mandela. Let's lock him up for 27 years as a test.]

This headline begs me to ask the question: did people get offended because Nelson Mandela was mentioned or because Kanye West supposedly said it?

Let's say Kanye West didn't make this statement(which he didn't). A 7 year old kid did after learning of Nelson Mandela's accomplishments, or hell, George Clooney. Would you then respond, "Alright, put your hands behind your back..." and rush him off so he can begin his 27 year prison term?

He didn't say it, but it can be debated that Kanye does have a greater immediate influence over this generation, especially in America. This is not to lessen Nelson Mandela's accolades. Admittedly, like many people, I hadn't even thought about the man Nelson Mandela until hearing about his death. Idris Elba probably helped a few people out in the last couple of weeks. But obviously, Kanye West has been in the ear of anyone who pays attention to mainstream for the last 5 to 6 years and has spawned a movement.

Kanye has similar values to Mandela, a couple of them being equality and the plight of a struggling people; so, it's not blasphemous to mention him alongside Mandela. That's not suggesting he is as great or a better leader than Nelson Mandela. However, I do believe because it's not in the same contexts or settings as past revolutions, people don't recognize Kanye West's fight. Kanye is a liberator. He is freeing a lot of peoples minds with his music.

Huffington Post stated at the end of their report of the fake story, "To be fair, Kanye has definitely claimed that he is Steve Jobs reincarnated in at least one real interview." So, are you equivocating Steve Jobs and Nelson Mandela? I wonder how the people of South Africa would feel about that.
